Alkawakibi

Alkawakibi Verein e.V.

Alkawakibi Verein e.V. is a registered, non-profit organization based in Berlin, Germany. The association is committed to promoting democratic values and the principles of Shura (consultation and participation), as well as building civil society structures at both national and international levels. Its educational programs are particularly aimed at people of Arab origin, with the goal of creating opportunities for peaceful and active participation in society.

Alkawakibi Verein supports and implements the project, which began in Turkey in 2015, providing care to Syrians affected by the war. The association has worked with local and international organizations to make it a success, notably the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) and the Independent Doctors Association (IDA).

We take our name from Abd al-Rahman al-Kawakibi, son of Aleppo and pioneer of reform and of the call for freedom against despotism.

The association is named after the Aleppo-born thinker Abd al-Rahman al-Kawakibi (1855–1902), one of the foremost advocates of democratic reform and the Arab Nahda, and author of “The Nature of Despotism and the Struggle Against Enslavement”. In his spirit, the association takes universal human rights as the reference point for its work and also advocates for environmental and consumer protection.

The association is registered in Berlin under German association law (e.V.), and membership is open to anyone who shares its aims. Out of this commitment, it has supported and implemented the maxillofacial prosthetics project since its launch in 2015. Visit the association’s website to learn more about its work: alkawakibi.org

The project we support and implement

How we work

  1. 01

Build in place — a clinic, a laboratory and a school that outlast the funding

  2. 02

Train the people already there, rather than fly expertise in and out

  3. 03

Partner with universities so knowledge keeps moving in both directions
